Canola yield and quality under tile drainage in the Canadian Prairies

چکیده
For areas with seasonally shallow water tables and poorly drained soils, subsurface drainage systems are ideal for removing excess from the root zone improving soil workability, trafficability, timeliness of field operations. With increased interest in tile southern Manitoba, objective this study was to evaluate impacts on canola yield oil qualities over three growing seasons (2019-2021) Winkler, Manitoba. The carried out replicated plots different treatments: controlled (CD), free (FD), no (ND). Subsurface drain tiles were installed at a depth 0.9 m. drains spaced 8 m CD 15 FD. Compared FD (3.02 Mg/ha), (3.51 Mg/ha) had significantly higher yields 2019 good rainfall. low rainfall 2020 2021, impact drainage, especially CD, diminished, significant differences between treatments. In 2020, average 3.12, 2.52, 2.97 Mg/ha ND, FD, respectively. Similarly, there difference (1.14 (1.52 ND (1.07 Mg/ha). under drought conditions not significant. This could be related narrower spacing, which tends remove rapidly within profile during short periods high-intensity quality assessments (oil, protein, glucosinolate fatty acid profile) showed each years. suggests that environmental variables (mainly temperature precipitation) may have masked quality.

Forecasting wheat yield in the Canadian Prairies using climatic and satellite data
Wheat yield forecasting is a significant component of planning and management of wheat exports from the Canadian Prairies. Commonly, regression models employing agroclimatic data pertaining to post-planting period are used as forecasting tools. However, the planning process of wheat export requires yield estimates even in advance of crop planting. Such advanced estimates are possible by using t...

متن کاملWater security in the Canadian Prairies: science and management challenges.
In this paper, we discuss the multiple dimensions of water security and define a set of thematic challenges for science, policy and governance, based around cross-scale dynamics, complexity and uncertainty. A case study of the Saskatchewan River basin (SRB) in western Canada is presented, which encompasses many of the water-security challenges faced worldwide. A science agenda is defined based ...
